Race of Champions Coming to Marlins Park

Automobile racing is one of the most adrenaline-filled sports out there. People love to see racers competing with each other in a high octane battle for supremacy. Automobile racing comprises of various events, some of which include the F1 Grand Prix, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and the IndyCar Series.

All the events mentioned above involve a number of racers competing with one another on a track. However, there exists one very different sort of racing competition as well. Known as the Race of Champions, this competition pits two drivers head-to-head on a racecourse. After making waves in various European countries for years, the Race of Campions is now coming to Marlins Park, in Miami.

Debuting in the U.S.

The Race of Champions was first held in 1988. It brings together racers from different circuits, including Formula One, IndyCar and World Rally Championship, and puts them in a head-to-head racing competition unlike any other.

The next Race of Champions is set to take place in the United States for the first time ever. The venue is Marlins Park, which is unusual as it is a baseball stadium. The Vice President of Operations and Events at Marlins Park, Claude Delorme, was first skeptical at the idea of hosting an automobile race at the stadium. With time, however, he realized that the event in question has a huge following around the world and will be a very popular one in the U.S. as well, so the process of converting the stadium into a temporary racetrack was given a green light.

Not the Usual Kind of Race

The Race of Champions that is set to be held at Marlins Park in January, 2017, is different than other forms of racing in more ways than one. The drivers go head-to-head in this race, which means that there are only two racers on the track at a time. To make things more challenging, the drivers have to drive in many different cars as opposed to just one. This makes it difficult for them to judge how their vehicles work, and all decisions have to be made on the racetrack itself. Drivers, thus, don’t have a chance to get accustomed to their car, and have to learn the complexities of their vehicle quite quickly in order to gain control over it.

A Matter of Pride

Due to the one-on-one nature of the race, there is a lot of pride that comes with winning. This is helped by the fact that the racers belong not only to different countries but to different racing genres as well. So if a person from NASCAR beats someone from Formula One, they get instant bragging rights.

For the people watching the race, it’s very different from other events where they have to sit for hours to see something decisive take place. That’s not to say that other forms of racing are boring or less entertaining than the Race of Champions, but many viewers prefer the instant nature of these one-on-one races. If you’re one of these people, or if you just want to support the U.S. drivers taking part in the Race of Champions, be sure to head out to Marlins Park on January 21st and 22nd to join the excitement.
