The New Lotus Elise Lightweight ‘Sprint’ Edition is Finally Here

The Lotus Elite has been updated for 2017, which now includes a revised look of the older version and a brand new lightweight model to revive the Sprint nameplate.

Lotus has recently revealed the release of the 2017 refreshed version of the Elise, which among other things includes a new lightweight variant of its official sports car headlining. It is set to go on sale this spring.

Fondly referred to as the ‘Elise Sprint’ by car aficionados, and reviving the old ‘Sprint’ name, its features are a host of weight saving measures that are aimed at trimming the mass to 798kg without fluids, which is 26kg lighter than that of the standard versions of the updated car. Its position is below the Elise 250 Cup but above Elise Sport models.

The use of a new lithium-ion battery, new lightweight alloy wheels, carbon racing seats and the making of the roll hoops from carbon-fiber saves on the cars overall weight. Also included in this new version is a polycarbonate rear screen.

The new version comes with new weight-saving parts that have been strategically placed. The regular 1.6-litre 134bhp car can only manage 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds while the new and more potent Spring 220 with its refurbished 217bhp 1.8-litre engine does the same dash in 4.1 seconds. The Sprint is also marked out with unique design tweaks that include a matte black rear fascia, subtle side stripes, black wheels and Sprint badging.

Alongside this new version, the rest of the Elite range has similarly been updated and is presently 10kg lighter. Also included is a redesigned front apron with large radiator grilles together with revised rear lights. The new aerodynamic elements are well hidden away underneath the car; you wouldn’t even know they were there! Regarding the cockpit, the gearstick is now perfectly housed in an open-gate mesh. This new Elise also gets a revised center console with new graphics on the instrument panel for a fresh look. Prices will be around £32,300, with the lightweight Sprint model will starting from £37,300 and the Elise Cup 250 from £47,400.
